Grounds Committee Continues Work
On Tuesday,
August 19, 2008,
Aunt Rhodie’s Landscaping and Design Studio crew rolled in and got to work on
the Welcoming
Entrance Garden,
picking up where the Grounds Committee paused. Their first order of business
was to haul away the piles of plant material for recycling. They also stripped
the sod and removed a concrete curbing. Then they began the excavation and
reconstruction work. < Photos

UU in Print
Did you see the message of Unitarian Universalism in the New
York Times? Thanks to the profound generosity of UU members and friends, this ad
appeared on Sunday. The outpouring of your generosity in response to the tragic
events in Knoxville is living proof
that we know who we are as Unitarian Universalists. That we stand on the side
of love and are not afraid to live our faith in the world.
New Directory
The Communication Committee has been busy planning the next
UU directory. We want to get everyone's
photo in this time, so please plan ahead. We will be taking candid and posed
shots before and after four Sunday services from August 17th through September
7th.
If you prefer a posed photograph or a family group, photographers will be set up downstairs in
the lounge before and/or after the four services on the dates listed below.
Otherwise we will do our best to get a good candid shot of you. We hope to reach everyone so if you or
someone you know is homebound or has other reasons why they can't be at one of
these services, please e-mail Elaine Kresse or call the church office and leave
a message with Ann.
Mark your calendars and Smile!

Jeanne Nakamura has registered our
church at http://www.goodsearch.com. For every search by a user who selects our
church, we will receive about a penny at the end of the year. To use Good
Search, go to http://www.goodsearch.com,
type “Unitarian” in the “Who do you search for” box, and click “verify”. Scroll
down the drop-down list and select our Davenport church. This will be now be
saved for each time you come back to the site and every search you do here will
be counted towards our church’s account. Thanks for your support!

Layperson of the Month
Elaine Kresse is our layperson of the month. Her latest behind-the-scenes
volunteer work seemed like a simple task but ended up being a big job. On top
of her regular work as board clerk, chairperson of the committee to reorganize
committees (known as the V-8 Committee), and volunteer to help with the
organization of the new directory, she spent quite a bit of time over 2 weeks
providing information to our consultant.
So, when you see Elaine, thank her for all of her work on behalf of the
congregation – and for raising her hand, yet one more time.

What is a Welcoming Congregation?
The Unitarian Church is a Welcoming
Congregation for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) persons.
The congregation became a Welcoming Congregation in 1994 ( ? ) after a
period of study and reflection by congregation members.
The Unitarian Church fulfills its role as
a Welcoming Congregation by offering GLBT persons a religious home free of
discrimination and supporting GLBT events in the community. Quad Citians
Affirming Diversity was an early project of the church. To learn more about

Steven Klien:
The Ethics of Video
Rhetoric: Campaign Ads
and Public Character
Television
advertisements are the
single most influential
form of political
campaign communication.
So-called "negative
ads," despite their
controversial nature,
play a particularly
important role in
influencing voters. We
therefore need to
consider the ethical
implications of how such
ads function. Our own
Steve Klien, Professor
of Communication Studies
at Augustana College and
researcher of political
rhetoric, will share a
framework for viewing
campaign ads critically,
identifying elements of
rhetorical "videostyle"
that encourage citizens
to perceive politics and
politicians in
particular ways.
